History of MHDI
The Metekel Humanistic and Development Initiative is a legally recognized for non-profit, non-political, non-religious and Humanistic-development-oriented Ethiopian Residents’ Humanitarian and development initiative, which is registered and certified by the FDRE Authority for Civil Society Organizations-AfCSO, with registration number of 5369, based on Proclamation number 1113/2011 (1113/2019). The initiative also has its own Establishment legal Document, Minute, and bylaw, which is approved and registered by FDRE Agency for Civil Society Organizations. The Initiative has opened its head office at Addis Ababa since August 2021and branch office at Metekel Zone, G/Bels town.
MHDI was established as a response to provide humanitarian assistance to IDPs and people in need at Metekel and border neighbor Awi zones, who are displaced from their villages and in need of humanitarian support, and human right protection, that has or may be happened by different reasons. In addition, the initiative also has established to promote indigenous knowledge based conflict resolution & peace building, and development activities that will change lives of rural communities of the two zones- (Metekel and Awi zones), and also contributes few to SDGs of the county.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE OF THE INITIATIVE
1. Work on capacity building trainings and awareness creation activities that brings changes in Peace building, tolerance, Cultural integration, Human right and conflict resolution mechanisms regarding the conflicts and disagreements in community;
2. Discuss and Work with Government bodies on issues and challenges that the general community are facing, and proposes alternative solutions, to solve the challenges.
3. Working on creating the citizen that feel and responsible on the civil society tolerance, living together in brotherhood, economic, social and political participation to be developed and ensure the prevalence of justice, good governance and democracy to be developed by conducting continues awareness creation trainings, festivals, and other communication tools.
4. Working with elders, community leaders and religious leaders to improve cultural and local courts and leadership mechanisms that bring peace, tolerance and unity among the local community.
5. Arrange a platform that brings and enhances the participation of all intellectuals/scholars, Investors/business men and any supporters of Metekel, whose families are from/out of Metekel but are currently living at different corner of the world, to discuss, get full information about Metekel, and contribute their intellectual, financial and material support for Humanitarian assistances, peace and development endeavours of Metekel.
6. Mobilize and motivate local and international investors, who are owners of different business and working in Metekel, to participate in voluntary and humanitarian services and development activities of the area.
7. Create awareness on environmental protection and natural resources for the community by developing the skills on reservation and use of balanced and sustainable natural resources;
8. Provide Humanitarian assistance for IDPs and people in need, including rehabilitation and post resettlement support.
9. Work effectively for the society to get access of clear water and sanitation programs;
Management of MHDI
Management Capacity of MHDI: MHDI has emerging governance structure including organisational systems that guide decision making and reinforce organisations responsibilities and accountabilities. It has solid policies on financial management, human resources management, Procurement management, resource mobilisation & Diversification strategy, manual Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning-MEAL, Feedback & Compliance Response mechanism, and safeguarding policies. One document: Program/project Implementation Manual is on development stage. MHDI is led by Board of directors (5 Members), 2 senior Board advisors, and 5 staffs with competent in fields of leadership, Program, admin and financial management with respect to peace building, Development and humanitarian programs management experience. There are also 5 senior voluntary technical specialists with extensive experience in managing and leading large scale programmes that will provide technical and managerial guidance and support to MHDI and the proposed action. The current contract staffs of MHDI, who are working as full time and/or part time are General Manager, Project/Program Manager, Admin &finance Coordinator, Community Engagement Officer-CEO and Project Accountant.
